Toronto Man Tries to Escape Winter by Moving to His Own Heated Shed
With yet another brutal Canadian winter in full swing, one Toronto resident has taken extreme measures to avoid the cold—by moving into his own backyard shed, now transformed into a private tropical paradise.
Greg Thompson, 38, had finally had enough after his car door froze shut for the third time this month. “I just snapped,” he said. “I looked at my snow-covered house, then at my tiny shed, and thought—why not?”
Armed with a space heater, some beach chairs, and a truckload of sand from a landscaping company, Greg turned his backyard shed into a warm escape from winter. “I even put up fake palm trees and a ‘Welcome to Greg’s Island’ sign,” he said proudly.
The transformation, however, wasn’t without challenges. “My wife wasn’t thrilled when I stole her hairdryer to keep my toes warm,” he admitted. “And the neighbors keep knocking, asking if I’m okay.”
Greg spends his days sipping from a coconut-shaped cup, wearing sunglasses, and listening to ocean wave sound effects on repeat. “I haven’t seen snow in two weeks,” he boasts. “Technically, it’s just outside the door, but if I don’t look at it, it doesn’t exist.”
His wife has given him until March to return to the house, but Greg remains optimistic. “Maybe I’ll stay until April,” he mused. “Or maybe I’ll build a shed on the beach next year—one with Wi-Fi.”
